Saturday: 5700m Threshold on Lake Quinsigamond

Cloudy, nice temp, mid 60s.  Wind from the North at 8 to 10 mph.  I rowed the main piece with this as a tail wind.  Water conditions were nice for the first 1000m, then choppy for the next 3000m, then it smoothed out at the south end of the lake.  It was rough enough that I had some trouble maintaining stroke length.

I went out with great exuberance and with the tail wind I had no trouble holding under 2:10 over the first 2k or so.  By then the chop had built up and I was struggling to keep my oars off the water on recovery.  After I passed the bridge I was waked pretty hard by a waterskiing boat that was pulling someone on a wake board slowly enough that the boat wasn’t even planing.  The wake was huge and stopped me cold.  I recovered from that and went another 700m or so, and got waked by another waterskier, but this time it was a bit further away and a bit easier to row through.

From there, I was down around the islands and the water was getting better.  I tried to push the pace a bit more, but I was pretty tired out.  I had enough lake to get 5700m done.  Final split was 2:12.6, which is the fastest I’ve done the lake, but it was quite a tail wind.  I would have hoped with that kind of a boost, I could have held it down around 2:10, but I guess I’m not quite that fit.

Tomorrow:  Rest day.

Tuesday: August CTC – 3 x 9′ / 3′

This week, it has been tough to get into any kind of a routine.  My two sons are in the final stages of moving out into apartments in Cambridge, and so the house is in a state of chaos.  They also keep radically different hours than I do, going to bed around the time I usually get up.  At any rate, I stayed up way too late again last night.  I’m glad I did because it was good to spend a bit more time with them before they disappear into grad school.

But it meant that I faced a choice.  Get up at my normal time and try to do a tough workout on too little sleep, or sleep in and try to grab a similar workout on the erg at work.  I opted for the latter.

I was scheduled for a waterfall workout on the water (3K/2.5K/2K on 5′ rest), and my first thought was to just do that on the erg.  That flowed pretty naturally into the idea of changing it to the time that it would take me to do those distances on the water (roughly 13.5′, 11.25′, 9′).  When I did that and realized that this months Cross Team Challenge is 3 x 9′ on 3′ rest, I opted for that.  It’s been tough enough to find a time to do the CTC, and to have a CTC that looks like a great threshold workout fall on threshold workout day when I’m stuck on an erg anyway.  It seemed like an opportunity too good to pass up.

I started with a 9 minute warmup.  Basically rowed at 2:00 pace with 4 power bursts.

As always, the challenge is pacing.  I’m not doing enough erg sessions to know where I am, but my default for these long interval sessions is about 1:50, so I went with that.  It felt pretty good in interval number 1, and I ended up a second faster than target.  Then the shorter rests started to catch up with me.  Second interval was tough and I ended up around 1:49.7, and I was pretty much toast at the end of it.  I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to hold onto the pace in the third interval, so I started out aiming at 1:51, then had to slow down to 1:52, then 1:53.  In the 7th minute, I was looking at 1:55s, which honestly wasn’t that much faster than my warmup!  I sped up a bit in the last minute and finished with a 1:53.3 avg.  Overall, this gave me a 1:50.6 avg for the whole workout, a total of 7323 meters for the challenge and (for now) a seat in Free Spirits Boat 1.

I think that I should be able to improve on this if I do it again.  I might be able to sneak below 1:50 if I am not on slides, not erging in socks, and more careful in the first rep.

Looking at the heart rates, I pushed it pretty hard.  I finished the third interval with my HR at my maximum, 185.  I haven’t seen that in a workout for a while.  Nice to know I can still go there.  I just wish I was going faster when I did!

It was a pretty taxing workout.  Over 9 minutes “in the red” and another 14 minutes above my Anaerobic Threshold.  I think tomorrow I will have to careful to keep it below 155.

In terms of results, here are the stats.  You can see the huge drop off in the third interval.

Now I am off to the airport for a quick trip to San Diego.  I will be in the fitness center for the next 2 mornings.  Then hopefully on Friday, I will do a long row exploring the HOCR course.

Saturday: Hard Distance – 5.6K r24

Conditions:  Wind – Light WSW 2-4mph mostly a cross wind.  Mid 60s.  Very few boats out.  Only waked once!

Plan:

  1. Threshold session.  Hard distance
  2. Rate: 24 spm <– not trying to go all out, but push it a little
  3. Pace: 2:15 to 2:20

Data from Crewnerd today.

Well, that was a bit slower than I was hoping.  I was struggling with leg numbness and a lot of butt pain from the seat in the boat I was using.  It hurt a lot, and by the time I got to the end of the 5.6K piece, both of my feet were quite numb.  Still, the limiting factor was really my CV fitness.  I have a lot of work to do on middle distances before head racing season rolls around.

Did I mention that it’s a lousy boat?

Tomorrow:  Rest day.

Next week:  I am racing on Sunday.  The Cromwell Cup on the Charles River in Boston.  It’s a masters event, so a 1K sprint race.  The setup (I think) is heats and finals, so I will probably be racing twice.  I’ve never rowed this part of the river before.  The race is on a straight section of the river, under 2 bridges and ends at the Riverside Boat Club.  This section is called the Powerhouse Stretch because there is a power station on the cambridge side of the river in the middle of it.  It should be an adventure.

Saturday: 11K in a double and National Learn to Row Day

Saturday was National Learn to Row day here in the US.  Many club host open house events, ours was no exception.

Before all the festivities got started at around 8AM, five of us met up for a row on Quinsigamond.  I was in a double with Joe in the bow.  Bob and Eric were in another double, and Deb was in a single.

It was overcast and a chance for rain, but it never materialized.  There was a 5-10mph breeze from the North, which was a tailwind heading down lake and a headwind heading up lake.  This breeze built slowly through the morning and was around 15 mph by the time we finished the Learn to Row Day activities at 11:30AM.

Joe had been sick all week and was nursing a sore shoulder from a minor injury last weekend, but he was game to row hard.  I had gone into the session thinking I would just take it easy.  But when we headed down lake we were side by side with the other double and I did NOT want to get dropped.  So, I kept the rate around 24 or 25 and full pressure all the way down the lake.  The boat felt quite heavy.  We had opened up a couple of lengths on them by the end, but we looked a lot worse off.  Joe had to fight off the urge to throw up.  I guess he wasn’t all the way recovered.

When we turned around up lake, I dropped the rate down to 22 but still kept pulling hard.  I didn’t want to completely lose contact with Bob and Eric.  We hung on like that through nearly 4K of rowing into the wind, and I have to assume that Joe was feeling a bit better because he started calling for sets of 10 hard, with 10 at a paddle.  Then for the last 3 sets, he was asking for 3/4 pressure during the off bits.  You can see from my HR how hard I was working in that stretch.  I was too busy rowing to look around, but I think we closed the gap a bit with the other boat during this bit.

We turned to head home and really just rowed pretty easy for most of the way.  Finally, Joe said that we had 500m left, what did I want to do with it.  I said I wanted to bring up the rate and row it hard.  I brought the rate up to 28 and focused on trying to keep my strokes clean.  The boat felt like it was moving reasonably well in this block.  Then we headed back to the dock.

Looking at the HR data, I was a brutally hard workout.  Looking at the pace, not so much.

We got the boats put away, and I ran off to get coffee and treats for the event.  By the time I got back, there were already about 20 people there.  By the end of the day, we had hosted over 35 folks curious about rowing and gotten 29 of them out on the water.  I also got to try sweep rowing for the first time.  I stroked an 8 for two of the outings.  We would put 2 experienced rowers in seats 7 and 8, and fill the rest of the boat with the “Learn To Row” (LTR) folks.  We would then have everyone row by pairs, then try it by fours, then just have the stern pair set the boat with the all the newbies rowing.  By the end of each outing, we were able to get all 8 of us rowing and give them a feel for what it is like.

We had 2 eights on the water and about 8 or 10 boatloads of folks out on water all together.  It was the most successful LTR day that we can remember for our club and a lot of them indicated an interest in taking classes.  Very exciting stuff.

I’m not sure I got much of a feel for sweep rowing under the circumstances, but I enjoyed it.  The oar is huge, but with two hands on it, it feels like you can control the feathering and height off the water quite precisely.  The body motion would also take some getting used to.  Getting the arm farthest from the oarlock out between my knees at the catch, and leaning out over the oar was a new experience.  I think I like it and I’d welcome the chance to get into a sweep boat in the future.

Today (Sunday):  I am giving myself a day off.  My elbow is still bugging me, so I am popping the Ibuprofen and wearing my brace.  Tomorrow, I’m back on the Charles in my single.  I think 1000m repeats are the order of the day, but probably with a rate cap.
